Gold deposition

A common request is to deposit a fresh Au film on a sample. A gold evaporator is permanently maintained in the ‘Prep Main’ chamber. Place the sample on the front slot of that manipulator, then drive to the saved ‘(BLOCH) Au evaporator’ position. The evaporator is mounted from above. After the evaporator towards your sample, the recommended deposition parameters are 2.9 A for 120 seconds. This will result in a just barely visible coating over the entire sample plate.

Please remember to retract the evaporator when you are finished, to avoid collision with the manipulator.

Please also deposit only the minimum amount of gold required, as refilling the evaporator involves a multi-day vent-bake cycle of the chamber.
