Gold deposition

There is no clean-gold surface attached to the measurement manipulator for Fermi edge reference measurements. A common request is to deposit a fresh Au film on another sample plate or on the sample itself before cleaving. A gold evaporator is permanently maintained in the ‘Prep Main’ chamber for this purpose. Place the sample on the front slot of that manipulator, then drive to the saved ‘(BLOCH) Au evaporator’ position. The evaporator is mounted from above. After the evaporator towards your sample, the recommended deposition parameters are 2.9 A for 120 seconds. This will result in a just barely visible coating over the entire sample plate.

Please remember to retract the evaporator when you are finished, to avoid collision with the manipulator.

Please also deposit only the minimum amount of gold required, as refilling the evaporator involves a multi-day vent-bake cycle of the chamber.
